A Guide for a GOAN Christmas Eating

With Christmas and New Year around the corner, festivities have begun all over and with the number of parties and weddings that people attend it is not surprising that many find that their waist lines have expanded by the end of the season. View the Newspaper o HERALDO with the published print article on 24 Dec 2012.
5 Kgs by 1 January is what your worried and then you calm yourself saying you will take care of it in the new year.

Well YES YOU did just like last year and the year before and you are now 10-15 kgs heavier that you were in College...sign of prosperity....

The answer is sensible eating.

Here are some tips to make your SWEETS healthier:

  • Use Jaggery particular COCONUT palm jaggery or Madachem GODD instead of sugar to prepare sweets as it is more nutritious having valuable minerals such as Iron and calcium.

  • Make cakes more nutritious by adding grated carrots, dates, prunes and dried figs along with nuts instead of plain TUTI FRUITY. Adding dry fruit also helps to cut down the amount of sugar that needs to be added. Most of Goan Christmas sweets are rich in ghee and coconut making them calorie dense.

  • BEBEINCA is rich in saturated cholesterol. Dodol is rich in saturate fat, but contains iron and calcium because of the Jaggery, that is used in its preparation.

  • CHONER DOCE is rich in protein as well as FAT. Enjoy them in small portions.Use pure ghee or butter as a shortening instead of vanaspati or margarine to reduce the amount of Trans FAT in your sweets and savories items.

  • Prepare savory items like NEVREOS, KULKULS, KORMOLAM, etc using wheat flour or multi grain flour instead of Maida and after frying them, drain them on absorbent paper to remove the access oil.

While planning the menu for Christmas lunch or dinner party, chose the main course dishes carefully. Remember, you do not need to deprive yourself and can enjoy all your favorite foods in small portions. Ensure that you eat a variety of food and restrict the amount of oil, sugar, alcoholic beverage, and soft drinks as they are high in calories.

Xacutti
Traditional Christmas dishes include pork preparations which are very rich in saturated fats and cholesterol- HENCE calories. Items like Chicken or Beef Xacutti are also prepared. As Xacutti is a coconut based dish its rich in saturated fats. My tips here are if you’re eating the same, Use the meats and try to limit the gravy you consume. Excessive amounts of saturated fats are bad for the heart. So keep portion size small.

It is best to serve plain Pulao, sanna’s or bread. Use brown Basmati Rice instead of White. Use Parboiled or brown rice too to make the RICE cake or Sana. As Sanna are fermented they make a very healthy meal along with other items.
Sanna's
Complement the non veg main course with Salads. Avoid mayo based salads.
Cook food using very little oils.

Consume alcoholic beverages in moderation. Dilute preferably with plain water rather than with SOFT DRINKS. Alcoholic beverages are calorie dense and also increase appetite and diluting them with Soft drinks pushes up the calorie count further. Sip your drink slowly and limit the consumption to 2 pegs.
Serve fruit juices instead of soft drinks. Go for the NO ADDED SUGAR versions of 100% pure fruit juice. Fresh is better if you have the help. They are rich in Vitamins.

Limit starters to 2 items. Go with Grilled or Tandoor rather than fried items.

Remember consumption of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks along with fried snacks contribute to a very high calorie intake. OVER 1000 Calories or 3 hours of walk time…so go easy. A healthy alternative is to serve a mixture of dry fruits and nuts instead of the regular fired stuff.

For deserts serve fruit salad. Prepare the custard using skimmed milk as it has lower fat content.
The traditional Christmas plum pudding is nutritious, but calorie rich because of rum or brandy used in its preparation. Portion control is really advised here.

Practice the principal of balancing Calories particularly when socializing. You need to accommodate the calories that come from beverages, snacks or starters, main course items and the desserts rather than simply adding them by OVER EATING.

Either Ways whatever you do if your a fit person you will be able to burn off the weight gain. Get in touch with my dietitians to help you burn off that fat in the NEW year. Book your time with a dietitian by Clicking here ....Talk to a Dietitian

WHY TEST FOR CHOLESTEROL & WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WITH THE RESULTS?

People know they have to test. People get results and get alarmed and then the test gets filed and the alarm bells fade away till next years blood test. So what should you do? From a Cholesterol point of view, let me break it down for you.

First Ask;
How much cholesterol you have floating around in your blood—and what types—can help you figure out your risk for heart disease?
Is it important to get your cholesterol tested periodically?
How often you should get tested depends on your risk for heart disease?
Are you at low risk for heart disease? Then you need a test every five years. If you're at higher risk, you'll need a test every two years. Ask your doctor which group you fall into.

Getting a cholesterol test is easy. All you need to do is have a tube's worth of blood drawn from your arm. Call us at +91 9743430000 and we can help a with home based sample collection.
The preparation, however, takes a little more effort. Food and drinks affect your cholesterol profile, so you have to fast for 12 hours to get accurate readings of your LDL ("bad" cholesterol), HDL ("good" cholesterol), and triglyceride levels. You also need to avoid drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test.

Wait for the tests to be delivered.

Understanding your test results

Quick guide to cholesterol and triglyceride levels

Total cholesterol level                         Total cholesterol category
Less than 200 mg/dL                              Desirable
200–239 mg/dL                                     Borderline high
240 mg/dL and above                            High                YOU NEED A DIET CONTROL!

LDL cholesterol level                          LDL cholesterol category
Less than 100 mg/dL (less than 70 mg/dL for people at high risk)      Optimal
100–129 mg/dL                                     Near optimal/above optimal
130–159 mg/dL                                     Borderline high
160–189 mg/dL                                     High
190 mg/dL and above                            Very high                    YOU NEED A DIET CONTROL!

HDL cholesterol level HDL cholesterol category
Less than 40 mg/dL       Low (representing risk)                        YOU NEED A DIET CONTROL!
60 mg/dL and above     High (heart-protective)

Triglyceride level        Triglyceride category
Less than 150 mg/dL                Normal
150–199 mg/dL                       Borderline high                        YOU NEED A DIET CONTROL!
200–499 mg/dL                       High                                        YOU NEED A DIET CONTROL!
500 mg/dL and above              Very high                                 YOU NEED A DIET CONTROL!

When discussing your cholesterol test results with your doctor, be sure to tell him or her if any of these three things apply to you:
  • Did you have the flu or another illness shortly before the blood test? These events can have a dramatic effect on your cholesterol levels.
  • Was your diet very different than normal in the weeks leading up to the cholesterol test? If so, tell your doctor. High levels of alcohol or carbohydrates can raise triglycerides.
  • Did you forget to fast or sneak something to eat or drink before the test? Don't be embarrassed to say so. Otherwise, you could end up on a medication you don't need.

What next?

If your total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, or triglycerides are borderline high, high, or very high, you and your doctor will talk about how to get your levels lower.

Treatment may include:
  • Changing your diet
  • Exercising more
  • Taking a cholesterol medication
  • A combination of all of the above.

Before deciding on a treatment plan, though, your doctor will want to get a good picture of your heart health. He or she will likely check:

  • Your blood pressure, to make sure it is in a healthy range.
  • Your pulse, to make sure that your heartbeat is regular and forceful.
  • The size of your thyroid gland, which can be determined by feeling your neck. An underactive or overactive thyroid can affect cholesterol levels.
  • The pulses of the carotid arteries in your neck. Listening to the blood flow there can rule out any blockages.
  • The pulses in your legs, which can fade away if there are significant blockages in any of the arteries that go to the feet.

If your doctor is concerned about anything he or she sees during the physical exam, you may be sent for lab tests or imaging procedures. These could include:

  • An electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • A chest x-ray
  • An echocardiogram (ultrasound picture of the heart)
  • Tests of thyroid or kidney function
  • Ultrasounds of the legs

With the results from your cholesterol test, your physical, and any lab or imaging tests you needed, your doctor will be able to recommend how you should treat your cholesterol levels and lower your risk of heart disease.

TOP 5 foods for a traveling Athlete

Athletes face different types of adversity one is when they’re traveling. Athletes traveling to a game, match or event need to be in their best physical shape and especially aware about meeting carbohydrate, protein, vitamin and mineral requirements, balancing energy intake, maintaining adequate hydration, and making sure food is prepared and stored safely. Thats why we ask you to invest in a SPORTS NUTRITION PROGRAM

Dining out
The best way to meet these requirements is to plan out the whens, wheres and whats regarding your meals.  Your plan should be as close to your regular (at home) diet as possible.  Choose restaurants that provide options that will help fuel your health, energy, and performance. Restaurants with a buffet option are usually great places for team meals as they provide a large variety of good foods for the athletes like pasta, brown rice, roti, chapatis, lean meats, salads, fish, chicken, and plenty of vegetables.

Snacks appropriate for Athletes
While on the road, the snacks you are used to picking up at your local convenience store may not be easy to find. Because they are important for recovery periods after training and between meals, make sure to bring some with you.  Some snacks worth packing are cereal, cereal bars, canned fruits, dried fruit, powdered sports drinks or milk, concentrated fruit juice, and (if a microwave or stove is available) baked beans, or instant noodles.

Food Safety
Food safety is the biggest problem athletes can face when traveling in foreign countries. To avoid the risk of infection and illness in areas where the water is questionable, drink only bottled water or water from sealed containers, avoid ice in your drinks, use bottled water when brushing your teeth, avoid salad vegetables unless they are washed in bottled or boiling water, and only eat fruit if it can be peeled. If you’re in an area where the food quality is questionable, eat only from reputable hotels or well known franchises, avoid street stalls and markets, avoid fish and shellfish, only consume food that is steaming hot or has been adequately refrigerated. Also avoid sharing cups, bottles, and utensils.

Being prepared for your trip is the best way to ensure your own success both while traveling and competing.  Speak to a dietitian call  +91 9743430000 India/International for a sports nutrition plan. To book an appointment CLICK HERE

How to get a Safe FAT BURNER?

I have the reputation of getting results for most people with Nutrition Plans at our Clinic. All these nutrition plans do rely on Supplements and sometimes FAT BURNERS are required. However, my choice of a fat burner always almost rests with L-Carnitine a molecule ...Intrinsic to the human body and even found in baby food formula.

I forgot, a video post 3 years ago is probably one of the most watched videos on the internet about L-carnitine. 21,830 views when this post went live!

You will DIE 6 years earlier because Of DIABETES that starts during middle age

I am Middle Aged and scared. My father has mild sugar issues. He still eats sweets like a Kid. I am scared because beyond a certain age I cannot change my behaviour...So I started early... Early at the age of 37 eating right and hiring a personal trainer to discipline my workouts.

Let say I will live to the Age of 70. With Diabetes I will die at 63. At that age my financial advisor has indicated that I would be earning around Rs1.6 crores per annum. So if I conk off earlier I stand to loose about 10 crores, rather my family. Forget about LOVE and PAIN......lets focus on the money part.

Why Money??  Well today I spend 6000Rs on supplements, 6000 on a trainer, 2500 on a gym membership. These are the direct costs. As per my financial advisor the cost over 30 years is less than 1 crore......

Now living at 63,64,65,66, 67, 68, 69, 70 the way I want too...DIABETIC free I think from a money point is worth it....

I am not a DIABETIC! but I think this mail is for those of my friends who sail in the same boat as me....a family history of Inheritance...not of money but of BAD HEALTH....

We charge Rs 10,000 for a PREVENTION PLAN.....100 days of guidance with the best Nutritionists advising you step by step, with calls, emails, counselings,  nutrition charts, receipes and if your lucky a visit to the grocery store with you and your loved one on whats good and whats not! This then works for life....

Please do call me on 080 3232 9292 and speak to us on why we WANT YOU TO INVEST IN YOUR HEALTH via Nutrition.....

The above 6 years shorter lifespan is pulled from the below article featured in http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/218138.php

Individuals who develop diabetes during middle age have an average lifespan six years shorter than other people, researchers from the University of Cambridge, England, revealed in the New England Journal of Medicine after carrying out a major, multinational study, involving over 250 scientists from 25 nations.

We already know that diabetes doubles the risk of some life-threatening diseases, such as strokes and heart attacks. However, this study showed that several other diseases are more likely to affect people with diabetes, including infections and cancer.

Diabetes affects almost 285 million people globally. The authors said that their study highlights the importance of preventing diabetes.

Researchers from the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration gathered data on 820,900 individuals. They were all carefully monitored for approximately one decade. After taking into account major risk factors, such as smoking, age, and sex, they found that patients with diabetes had a higher chance of dying from various forms of cancer, mental illnesses, infections, and diseases of the lungs, kidneys liver and digestive system.

Most of the shortened life expectancy comes from strokes, heart attacks and other blood vessel diseases, the authors explained. Only a small number of links were explained by hypertension (high blood pressure, high blood lipid levels or obesity - conditions which commonly exist with diabetes II patients.

About 60 per cent of the reduced life expectancy in people with diabetes is attributable to blood vessel diseases (such as heart attacks and strokes), with the remainder attributable to these other conditions. Only a small part of these associations are explained by obesity, blood pressure, or high levels of fat in the blood - conditions which often co-exist with diabetes.

Its something me and my team do everyday. At 37 years of age, I need to convince people double my size and double my age to take up Nutrition to save their lives. For my fellow peers and younger staff, I need to carry the torch on " HOW NUTRITION CAN MAKE YOU YOUNGER".

My metabolic age is 26. ( Its my Birthday Today and 37 years as per my birth certificate)  Astaxanthin...a secret blend I have at my clinic. As a clinical Biochemist and Food Bio technologist I constantly try to push the metabolic understanding of the human body and how nutrition can cheat...YES CHEAT your body into Wellness.

If you want to CHEAT THE CLOCK, call me on +91 9743430000(India/ International) or email me at ryan@quanutrition.com.

For those of you who want to know more and how it happens, this video summaries techniques we use in India at our Clinic.

Chronological age is your age in calendar years. Basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy consumed per unit of time when all environmental factors are considered neutral, the digestive system is in a post-absorptive state (meaning that the digestive system is inactive, which requires about twelve hours of fasting in humans), and the energy expenditure is only sufficient to support normal functioning of the vital organs, the heart, lungs, nervous system, kidneys, liver, intestine, sex organs, muscles, and skin. Formulas for calculating basal metabolic rate take into account age, weight, height, activity level, body fat mass, and lean body mass.

An individual's metabolic age will vary depending how their calculated basal metabolic rate compares to others of the same chronological age. Metabolic age is a new term used in the health and fitness industry to describe overall fitness and metabolic activity. Examining metabolic age will give insights to the overall level of health and wellness in comparison to those of the same age. Improving personal fitness is a main concern of most health-conscious individuals

Be Careful when buying PROBIOTICs- USE CAUTION on YAKULT

Yakult needs to pull up its socks in India. A wonderful Probiotic drink that I personally use, but I now want to ask you to BUY FROM THEIR COLD STORE DEPOTS DIRECTLY. My reason is the shopkeepers and supermarkets are KILLING the good bacteria and so your BUYING SUGAR milk and no healthy benefit. The VIDEO HERE shows how Yakult is being mistreated in Storage at supermarket. THIS VIDEO is courtesy the PREMIUM Chain of GODREJ format store....and I AM ANGRY at them for not having systems in place to ensure compliance. SHAME on you GODREJ and YAKULT......( by the way I earlier complained to Yakult but they seem to be poor at their job at convincing their personnel to do the monitoring.....) Please share this with your loved ones and read further on safety for PROBIOTICS.

TO know how my dietitians can guide you on your choice of probiotics including YAKULT which I still love....( I buy directly from the company now...and hopefully the MORON truck drivers in India will keep their Refrigeration truck ON, so factory to company depot ..may be good!)

AS PER MY KNOWLEDGE ON PROBIOTICS you need to keep it Refrigerated and rise in temp should be inside your body.....As per Yakult's website  " 20. How long can Yakult be kept after taken out from the fridge?
It is not a problem to keep Yakult outside of the fridge for awhile. The Yakult bacteria slowly become active at temperature between 15 to 40 degrees Celsius.

When the bacteria become active, it will begin to produce lactic acid, which will affect the taste and make it sour. When there is too much acid produced, the bacteria will die, and the product will be less effective.

So, when Yakult is left outside of the fridge, the taste will become more sour and it will be less effective, but you can still drink it. However, it is best to keep Yakult refrigerated so you can fully enjoy the taste and health benefits."

People who take supplements that are supposed to contain beneficial bacteria (probiotics) may not be getting their money’s worth, according to a study presented by researchers from Bastyr University (Kenmore, WA). The finding that some of these products do not contain viable bacteria or are contaminated with other potentially harmful bacteria raises concerns about the safety and efficacy of these products.
The intestinal tract contains billions of beneficial bacteria that perform various necessary functions, such as aiding in the digestion and absorption of food and protecting the body against microorganisms that can cause infection. While there are dozens of different types of friendly bacteria,Lactobacillus acidophilusL. bulgaricus, L. thermophilus, L. reuteri, and Bifidobacterium bifidum are some of the more common strains found in the gut. Studies suggest that taking supplements containing these bacteria can help boost immune function and prevent or relieve certain health conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, vaginal yeast infections, and traveler’s diarrhea. However, commercially available probiotic products that do not contain what they are purported to contain will not deliver these benefits.

According to this new report, laboratory testing of 12 refrigerated and 8 non-refrigerated, randomly selected probiotic supplements obtained from different health food stores revealed that only one product contained the same bacteria as those listed on the label. Many of the refrigerated products had some beneficial bacteria, but contained fewer species of organisms than the label claimed. More than 30% of all supplements were contaminated with other microorganisms and 50% of the non-refrigerated products were completely dead. Dead probiotics have no impact on improving intestinal function or restoring the balance of normal intestinal flora.

The deficiencies found in these probiotic supplements may be due to poor manufacturing processes, poor quality control, or other environmental factors that cause the bacteria to deteriorate. While some probiotics are stable at room temperature, most require refrigeration to maintain live cultures. The findings in the new study suggest that many probiotic supplements will provide no benefit due to lack of viable organisms and may cause infection if contaminated with organisms that cause disease. However, no reports have been published linking a probiotic supplement to an intestinal infection. It is unclear at this point whether there are any adverse effects from the bacterial contaminants found in probiotic supplements.

So the bottom line, You know probiotics are good. At QUA NUTRITION our dietitians will help you decide and educate you about the best choices for your body. Call India & International +919743430000 or email us at devika@quanutrition.com to know more.
