How do I go about Choosing a Weight Loss Program ?

In your life time you probably will go on a diet. You probably have already tried it more than once with reasonable success, only to have the weight add back on a few months later. For many people, it is difficult to lose more than a few Kgs, and few succeed in remaining at the reduced weight. The difficulty in losing weight and keeping it off leads many people to turn to a professional or commercial weight loss program for help.

What are the GOLDEN rules if you decided to DIET and Loose weight using guidance or a program?

  1. There has to be a mention of Food and its Portions and its control….Negative calories is best.
  2. There has to be a mention of Exercise.
  3. It may come with a Personal trainer.
  4. It may include a Nutrition Coach.
  5. It should ask you to keep a log.
  6. You should be talking to somebody.
  7. You should be having a SPOTTER or a Family member that is your alter ego which keeps you on track. Both praise and criticism should be the job function of this person.
  8. The Program should be scientific and safe. If its not tailor made to your energy level requirements, the program is a failure in the long run.
  9. Supplements can be used, but with Consultation with an Expert and only after your medical history is cleared via tests and the Medical expert.
  10. No Program can guarantee you results in 4 weeks…..if they do, the weight will bounce back. Go for longer duration plans.
  11. When inquiring about a commercial weight loss program, be sure you are provided with a detailed statement of fees and costs of additional items such as dietary supplements or foods.
  12. Other important questions to ask of any potential weight loss program include:
    • Does the staff consist of qualified counselors and health professionals such as Nutritionists, doctors, and exercise physiologists?
    •   Are food choices flexible and suitable?
    •  Are weight loss goals set by the client and/or the health professional?
    •  What percentage of people complete the program?
    •  What is the average weight loss among people who finish the program?
    •  What percentage of people have problems or side effects? What are they?
    • Is there a maintenance program to help keep the weight off once it's lost?

If you plan to lose more than 10 to 20 kgs, have any health problems, or take medication on a regular basis, your doctor should evaluate you before you start a weight loss program. A doctor can assess your general health and medical conditions that might be affected by dieting and weight loss.
Also, a doctor should be able to recommend appropriate programs and help you come up with a sensible weight loss goal. If you plan to use a very-low-calorie diet, you definitely should be examined and monitored by a doctor.
