Nutrition for the GYM needs to be customised to your SEX, Muscle and Type of Exercise you Do!

GET STRONGER THE RIGHT WAY

More often than not, the average person under consumes protein, while the average athlete over consumes it.

PREPARE YOUR BODY FOR THE OVERHAUL: Right before the workout, protein is the most critical component as it will prevent the muscle from being broken down for fuel and will stimulate muscle growth and strength gains immediately after the workout. Also required is slow digesting carbohydrate to fuel your workout till the very end. As a sports nutritionist, my favourite pre training food is oatmeal with skim milk.

POST WORKOUT: Immediately after the workout, refuel your body with fast-digesting protein and carbohydrates. Protein provides your muscles with an immediate source of amino acids for building muscle protein. The carbohydrates will restock your depleted muscle glycogen stores, blunt the release of the catabolic hormone cortisol and will boost your levels of the anabolic hormone insulin. Insulin drives nutrients like glucose, amino acids and even creatine into muscle cells.
In my practice as a sports nutritionist, I often notice that post workout or training, overdosing on animal protein like eggs is a common practice. Ideally one should have a carbohydrate – protein ratio of 3:1 to witness gains in muscle mass. Eg’s: Flavoured yoghurt, Flavoured milk drinks, Fruit Smoothies, Meat/Chicken sandwiches, Breakfast cereal and milk.

EAT FREQUENTLY: Eat every two to three hours to get adequate calories. It keeps your body fuelled, supplies continual amino acids to your muscle fibers, and keeps your metabolism running.

HYDRATE WELL: Getting in plenty of water is critical for strength. Research shows that just a 2% decrease in bodyweight from water loss can significantly decrease muscle strength.

STAY AWAY FROM JUNK FOOD: Candy, chips and french fries can help you meet your additional requirements for energy but they can get you fat. Also, while sugar is good after a workout, it's horrible any other time of day because of insulin. When you boost insulin while you are just sitting around, it encourages fat storage and leads to more hunger and energy lows. A particular problem is high-fructose corn syrup.  Fructose can't be used by the muscles for fuel. So it goes to the liver where it is converted to glycogen. Once the glycogen levels of the liver are full it converts fructose into fat.

TENNIS ace, Sharmada Balu in Counseling with Celebrity Sports Nutritionist RYAN FERNANDO, Watch the insights in this counseling and why you should invest in a SPORTS NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR YOUR CHILD

Sharmada Balu's career graph is on an upward swing. The 17-year old Sharmada has jumped from beyond 1000 to just over 700 in the women's ITF rankings after her title winning effort at the Lucknow ITF $ 10,000 women's championship, this April.
She is now 5'10” tall, packs a real punch in her forehand and has earned a reputation for not giving up when the chips are down.
“That's been her greatest gain, in recent times,” says her coach Arjun Goutham, at the fledgling Tennis Excellence Academy, where the 10th standard student from Poorna Learning Open School student, sweats it out everyday.
“She is very talented. With a few more strokes in her armoury and a fitness regime in place, Sharmada will go a long way,” contends Arjun.
He adds, “Her serve and winning big points are her strengths.”
Born in a sports-loving family, Sharmada was started on gymnastics at the age of seven by her father, a State-level roller-skating champion.
A two-year stint at the Sports Promotion Association (SPA) provided the impetus for the young girl, who trained under Kiran and the Mahila Seva Samaja in Basavanagudi.
Sharmada joined the Tennis Village in 2001 and was handpicked by Indian Davis Cupper Mahesh Bhupathi for the Foundation for Indian Sports Talent (FIST) programme before being drafted into the Apollo Tyres Mission 2018 programme.
“I was coached by Mose Navarra, Prahlad Srinath and others. It was a fantastic experience.
I got to travel around the world and played in different conditions and surfaces. Unfortunately, the programme closed down abruptly,” she says.
“My parents – Balu and mother Suman – were pillars of strength and ensured that my exposure trips did not suffer even after the Apollo Mission.
At Tennis Excellence Academy, since last April, Sarmada says, “the introduction of fitness coach Vikram Aiyappa, mind coach Shree Advani and Nutrition coach Ryan Fernando ( VIEW Sharmada's SPORTS NUTRITION PROGRAM HERE)have contributed to my all round development,” vouches the teenager. In February this year, Sharmada was ranked in the 1300's but a good showing in the semi-finals at Ahmedabad and the Lucknow title win catapulted her to 700.

She is currently attending a 45-day fitness and conditioning camp under trainer Javier Captaine in Barcelona, Spain.
“At this moment, I am digging deep into my parents funds and will need a sponsor chipping in soon. Wimbledon glory and Olympic gold is very much in my radar but to reach there I need to play more at the international level.”

Nutrition helps you Break Records!

Nutrition for optimal athletic performance
To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art! Over the past 20 years, research has clearly documented the beneficial effects of nutrition on exercise performance. There is no doubt that what an athlete eats and drinks can affect health, body weight and composition, substrate availability during exercise, recovery time after exercise, and, ultimately, exercise performance.

For peak performance, every athlete needs:
  • ·         Adequate energy from food
  • ·         Enough fluids to keep the body hydrated
  • ·         The right balance of nutrients
  • ·         Replenished glycogen stores
  • ·         Protein to build and repair tissue
  • ·         Essential fatty acids

In my practice as a sports nutritionist, I’ve noticed that most athletes focus mainly on proteins and carbohydrates in their diet.
Very little attention is given to vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables which are responsible for carrying out countless enzymatic/chemical reactions occurring in the body. B vitamins help in breaking down food to give you energy to fuel your body - Are you getting enough? Magnesium is required to enable your muscles to contract and relax efficiently – are you cramping?

A sports nutritionist works with you to help YOU achieve peak performance by teaching you:
·         What to eat and drink before, during, and after exercise
·         How to use nutrition to help with performance and improve recovery time
·         When to use sports drinks instead of water
·         How to prevent dehydration
·         If certain vitamin or mineral supplements are needed
At Qua Nutrition, we coach you to eat like an athlete and empower you with performance foods.
Visit www.quanutrition.com to get the best out of your performance by signing up for a sports nutrition plan.  You deserve the best!
